Weigela Magical Fantasy | Dark Burgundy Foliage & Red Flowering Shrub | MAR - APR

Bold foliage meets brilliant blooms in Weigela Magical Fantasy, a striking ornamental shrub featuring rich, dark burgundy leaves and vibrant red, trumpet-shaped flowers. This dramatic combination delivers beautiful contrast and long-lasting visual interest to garden borders, foundation plantings, and mixed landscapes.

Unlike traditional green-leaved weigela varieties, Magical Fantasy offers deep burgundy foliage that creates a stunning backdrop for its colorful spring flowers. The vivid red blooms attract hummingbirds and pollinators, while the dark leaves continue providing ornamental interest long after flowering has finished.

Perfect for cottage gardens, contemporary landscapes, and mixed perennial borders, Magical Fantasy pairs beautifully with chartreuse foliage, silver-leaved plants, ornamental grasses, and soft pastel flowers. Its richly colored branches can also add dramatic contrast to fresh floral arrangements.

Growing Tips

Plant Weigela Magical Fantasy in fertile, well-draining soil in a location receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun generally encourages abundant flowering and helps maintain the richest burgundy foliage color. In hotter southern climates, light afternoon shade can help reduce heat stress.

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Once established, weigela is relatively low-maintenance, although supplemental watering during extended dry periods helps maintain healthy foliage and flowering.

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins. Mulch around the base of the plant to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures.

Pruning: Weigela typically flowers on old wood, so prune immediately after spring flowering to avoid removing next year's flower buds. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and lightly shape the shrub as needed.

Cut Flower Tip: Harvest burgundy foliage branches once stems have matured for use as dramatic greenery in floral arrangements. The dark foliage pairs especially well with blush dahlias, peach roses, and cream-colored flowers.

With its nearly black burgundy foliage, brilliant red blooms, and easy-care growing habit, Weigela Magical Fantasy is an exceptional choice for gardeners seeking bold color and distinctive landscape texture.

Caring for Your Bare-Root Plants

Your bare-root plants will be waking from dormancy and ready to grow when they arrive. For best results, plant them as soon as possible.

If you cannot plant immediately, store your bare-root plants in a cool, frost-free location to slow new growth. Do not allow them to freeze or dry out.

You may plant directly into prepared garden soil or temporarily pot them into 1-gallon containers. We recommend planting within a few days of arrival, as bare-root plants can decline quickly without proper soil, moisture, and growing conditions.

Plant Royalties & Propagation

The purchase price includes a plant royalty of $1.35–$1.49 per plant. These varieties are protected, and unauthorized propagation is prohibited.
