Physocarpus Panther® | Dark Purple Ninebark Bare Root Shrub | Mar-Apr
Physocarpus Panther® | Dark Purple Ninebark Bare Root Shrub | Mar-Apr
Couldn't load pickup availability
Dark, dramatic, and just a little mysterious, Physocarpus Panther® Ninebark brings nearly black foliage and striking contrast to the garden. This exceptional ornamental shrub features rich purple-black leaves, deep-colored stems, and delicate clusters of soft pink flowers that emerge in late spring.
Unlike larger traditional ninebark varieties, Panther® has a naturally compact, upright growth habit, making it perfect for smaller landscapes, mixed perennial borders, foundation plantings, and dramatic garden backdrops. Its intensely dark foliage creates beautiful contrast with pastel flowers, ornamental grasses, and silver-leaved perennials.
As the seasons progress, pink blooms give way to reddish seed capsules, adding another layer of interest. Panther® is also an excellent choice for cutting gardens, where its dark foliage and branching stems bring depth, texture, and contrast to fresh floral arrangements.

Growing Tips
Plant Panther® Ninebark in well-drained soil in a location receiving at least six hours of sunlight for the deepest foliage color. In hot southern climates, some afternoon shade can help reduce summer stress.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, ninebark tolerates occasional drought and adapts to a variety of soil conditions.
Prune immediately after flowering to maintain its natural shape, or selectively remove older branches to encourage fresh growth. Avoid excessive shearing, which can diminish its attractive upright form.
For floral designers, harvest leafy branches once the foliage has matured and stems are sufficiently firm to hold up in arrangements.
With its nearly black leaves, cold hardiness, and easy-care nature, Panther® Ninebark is an unforgettable addition to both ornamental landscapes and cutting gardens.
Shipping Information
All bare-root plants will ship in Mid-March to Early April. We are unable to accommodate requests for specific shipping or delivery dates. You will receive a shipping confirmation email with tracking information as soon as your order has been packed.
Caring for Your Bare-Root Plants
Your bare-root plants will be waking from dormancy and ready to grow when they arrive. For best results, plant them as soon as possible.
If you cannot plant immediately, store your bare-root plants in a cool, frost-free location to slow new growth. Do not allow them to freeze or dry out.
You may plant directly into prepared garden soil or temporarily pot them into 1-gallon containers. We recommend planting within a few days of arrival, as bare-root plants can decline quickly without proper soil, moisture, and growing conditions.
Plant Royalties & Propagation
The purchase price includes a plant royalty of $1.35–$1.49 per plant. These varieties are protected, and unauthorized propagation is prohibited.
