Moody foliage meets delicate, romantic blooms in Hydrangea macrophylla Midnight Pearl, an extraordinary bigleaf hydrangea that brings sophisticated contrast to gardens and floral arrangements.

This distinctive hydrangea features exceptionally dark green foliage with deep purple-black tones, creating a dramatic backdrop for its creamy white flowers. Each bloom is delicately edged in pink to red, producing a showy picotee effect that makes Midnight Pearl unlike traditional mophead hydrangeas.

Its compact growth habit and sturdy stems make it an excellent choice for decorative containers, shaded garden borders, foundation plantings, and intimate garden spaces. The striking flowers are equally beautiful in fresh floral arrangements, where their unusual coloring creates a soft, romantic appearance.

Midnight Pearl is especially appealing for gardeners who love dark foliage plants, unique hydrangea varieties, and flowers with intricate color patterns.

Growing Tips

Plant Midnight Pearl Hydrangea in rich, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Choose a location with morning sunlight and afternoon shade, especially in warm southern growing zones.

Hydrangeas prefer consistent soil moisture, particularly during summer heat. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures.

Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring, avoiding excessive nitrogen applications that can encourage foliage at the expense of flowers.

Avoid hard pruning in fall or early spring. Bigleaf hydrangeas commonly develop flower buds on older stems, so unnecessary pruning can remove the following season's blooms. Remove dead or damaged wood after new growth appears, and perform any necessary shaping after flowering.

For cut flowers, harvest mature blooms once the petals feel slightly firm and papery for improved vase life.

With its nearly black foliage and delicately edged white blooms, Midnight Pearl Hydrangea brings a remarkable combination of drama and charm to the garden.

Shipping Information

All bare-root plants will ship in March 2027. We are unable to accommodate requests for specific shipping or delivery dates. You will receive a shipping confirmation email with tracking information as soon as your order has been packed.

Please note: Clematis will ship separately from other bare-root plants.

Caring for Your Bare-Root Plants

Your bare-root plants will be waking from dormancy and ready to grow when they arrive. For best results, plant them as soon as possible.

If you cannot plant immediately, store your bare-root plants in a cool, frost-free location to slow new growth. Do not allow them to freeze or dry out.

You may plant directly into prepared garden soil or temporarily pot them into 1-gallon containers. We recommend planting within a few days of arrival, as bare-root plants can decline quickly without proper soil, moisture, and growing conditions.

Plant Royalties & Propagation

The purchase price includes a plant royalty of $1.35–$1.49 per plant. These varieties are protected, and unauthorized propagation is prohibited.
