Peony ‘Glowing Raspberry Rose’ (Cousins / Klehm, 1981)
An early-season stunner with that unmistakable Lyman Cousins inner glow.
‘Glowing Raspberry Rose’ is a double herbaceous hybrid in a rich rosy-raspberry tone — saturated, vibrant, and luminous from the very first week of peony season. The fully double, ball-shaped blooms carry fragrance and visible stamens tucked within the layers, giving the flower depth instead of flatness.
This hybrid first bloomed around 1968 and was introduced in 1981. Seedling #72-2, with parentage unknown, it has become a reliable early performer for growers who want bold color right out of the gate.
Each tall stem (to about 36") carries a single bloom, directing all the plant’s energy into one strong, well-formed flower. Stem strength is average to good, and the foliage holds up well through the season. It produces no seeds or pollen.
Early. Direct. Impactful.

Herbaceous hybrids combine the toughness of species peonies with the refined bloom form of garden varieties. They often bloom earlier, hold strong stems, and offer saturated color.
‘Glowing Raspberry Rose’ fits that model perfectly: early timing, strong vertical growth, and bold, clear color. It’s not subtle — and it’s not meant to be.
If you want to start peony season with authority, this is how you do it.
