Campanula ‘Evergreen’

Lavendar Improved, AKA Lavendel

Evergreen Series Campanula

An extraordinary Campanula unlike the familiar seed-grown varieties. The Evergreen Series produces substantial, long-lasting blooms that begin green and gradually develop a wash of color along the petal edges as they mature. The unusual green coloration comes from petal tissue taking on leaf-like characteristics, giving the flowers exceptional texture, substance, and longevity both in the garden and as a cut flower.

Plants can reach 24–40 inches tall when grown under favorable conditions and, with proper spacing and pinching, can produce 7–8 harvestable stems per plant. Unlike standard Campanula, Evergreen varieties can remain beautiful on the plant for weeks and should be harvested when several flowers are open.

Growing Information

Plant Type: True biennial
Height: 24–40"+
Spacing: 12" recommended
Light: Full sun to part sun
Harvest: When several flowers are open
Potential Yield: Up to 7–8 stems per plant
Cold Requirement: 12+ weeks consistently below 40°F

Important Cold Requirement

Unlike first-year-flowering Campanula such as the Champion Series, these are true biennials and require an extended period of winter cold to initiate flowering. FYI - Tennessee's 2025-2026 winter was sufficient for these.

After planting, allow approximately three weeks for plants to establish a strong root system. Beginning around late November, plants should receive at least 12 weeks of temperatures consistently below 40°F. Temperatures into the 20s and below are generally well tolerated once plants are established.

These are best suited to growers with reliably cold winters or those who can maintain cold conditions in an unheated or minimally heated tunnel. Areas that experience frequent extended warm spells during winter may not provide sufficient vernalization for reliable flowering.

Pinching for Cut-Flower Production

As flower spikes begin to emerge in early spring, pinch the initial central spike when it is approximately 2" tall. This encourages the development of multiple side shoots and significantly increases the number of usable stems. Plants that are not pinched may produce one exceptionally large central stem rather than multiple cut-flower stems.

A Remarkable Cut Flower

These Campanula are still relatively new to commercial cut-flower production and offer a form and texture rarely seen in the garden or vase. Their substantial blooms, exceptional longevity, tall stems, and unusual coloring make them an exciting specialty crop for experienced cut-flower growers.

Please note: This is a specialty crop with specific winter-temperature requirements. We strongly recommend reviewing the cold requirements above before purchasing to determine whether your climate or growing setup can provide adequate vernalization.
